Why do so many Korean almanacs put a small warning next to the Rat in 2027? It comes down to one old pairing: the Rat branch 子 and the Goat branch 未 are a “harm” pair, and Korean readers also count them as 원진 (wonjin), the resentment pair.
In the traditional calendar 2027 is 정미년 (丁未), the Fire Goat, sometimes called the Red Goat year in Korea. The heavenly stem 丁 is yin fire, the candle rather than the sun; the earthly branch 未 is summer earth that holds a little fire and a little wood inside it. The saju year starts at the solar term of spring, around 4 February 2027, not on 1 January and not at Lunar New Year (6 February).
What does the 子未 pairing mean for the Rat?
子 is the water of deep winter; 未 is dry earth from the height of summer. In the five-element cycle earth controls water, and in the branch tables the two form 子未相害, one of the six harms. A harm is not a clash. Nothing breaks loudly. Traditional readers describe it as friction between people or plans that should be on the same side: a colleague who quietly undercuts you, a family arrangement that keeps needing renegotiation, a partner who feels unheard.
Wonjin (원진) is a specifically Korean emphasis. Couples’ compatibility charts in Korea have flagged 子未 for generations, and in a yearly reading the same pair shows up as irritability that is out of proportion to its cause. The usual advice is practical rather than mystical: name the problem early, keep agreements in writing, and do not let small resentments pile up.
How might it play out at work, with money and in love?
Work. Rats tend to work by reading situations quickly and moving first. In a 子未 year, readers suggest checking who else has a stake before you move, because the friction tends to come from inside your own team rather than from rivals.
Money. The year’s earth presses on the Rat’s water, which traditional readers link to obligations: costs that come with responsibilities, family or property. It is a year for budgets with a margin, not for stretching.
Love and people. The wonjin picture is about closeness, so it shows up most with the people you live or work beside. Plain words beat clever ones this year. Single Rats are not “blocked”; the advice is simply to look past first impressions, which the harm pair tends to distort.

Which months of 2027 matter most for the Rat?
Each saju month has its own pillar and begins at a solar term, not on the 1st. Here are the months that form a classic pairing with the Rat branch 子. Months not listed are neutral for your branch; your day master decides them.
- Mar 6 – Apr 4 (癸卯 month): A punishment pairing: small legal, health-routine or paperwork snags are the classic picture. Double-check details.
- Apr 5 – May 5 (甲辰 month): The month sits in your three-harmony group, which readers treat as a friendly push from outside.
- Jun 6 – Jul 6 (丙午 month): The month clashes with your branch (충). Movement, change and friction: travel, moves and shake-ups cluster here. Avoid forcing big signings.
- Jul 7 – Aug 7 (丁未 month): The month “harms” your branch in the classical sense: quiet friction between people who are usually close. Korean readers also mark this as 원진 (wonjin), the “resentment” pair: irritation with people close to you. Cool off before replying. It is also the year pillar repeated, so whatever 2027 does to your branch peaks in this month.
- Aug 8 – Sep 7 (戊申 month): Three-harmony support: things you started earlier tend to pick up speed.
- Sep 8 – Oct 7 (己酉 month): A break pairing: an arrangement may need to be redone. Do not assume the first version will hold.
- Dec 7 – Jan 5 (壬子 month): Your own branch comes round as the month. Readers call it a “you” month: more drive and visibility, and more of your usual habits too.
- Jan 6 – Feb 3, 2028 (癸丑 month): A six-harmony month for you: people meet you halfway. A good window for asking, signing and reconnecting.
Does your birth year change the picture?
Every animal comes round every twelve years, but the heavenly stem on top changes, so each Rat year has its own element. Here is how your year stem meets 2027’s stem, 丁 (yin fire). One caution first: in saju your animal changes at the start of spring, around 4 February, so if you were born in January or early February, you belong to the previous year’s sign.
| Born | Year pillar | Meets 丁 (2027) as |
|---|---|---|
| 1936 | 丙子 · Fire Rat | fire meets fire: a peer, companion relationship with the year |
| 1948 | 戊子 · Earth Rat | the year’s fire feeds your earth stem: 2027 supports you |
| 1960 | 庚子 · Metal Rat | the year’s fire tempers your metal stem: pressure that shapes |
| 1972 | 壬子 · Water Rat | 丁壬 combination: the classic stem pairing, a pull towards the year |
| 1984 | 甲子 · Wood Rat | your wood stem feeds the year’s fire stem: you give energy to 2027 |
| 1996 | 丙子 · Fire Rat | fire meets fire: a peer, companion relationship with the year |
| 2008 | 戊子 · Earth Rat | the year’s fire feeds your earth stem: 2027 supports you |
| 2020 | 庚子 · Metal Rat | the year’s fire tempers your metal stem: pressure that shapes |
Why isn’t your animal sign the whole story?
Your animal is your year branch: one character out of eight in a saju chart. Traditional readers use it for the broad social weather of a year, but the day master (the stem of your birth day) is what the year is really read against, together with your ten-year luck cycle. Two Rats born in the same year can have opposite years. Treat everything above as the general picture, not your personal forecast.
Master Haewol’s 2027 Year Ahead reading does that part: it sets 丁未 against your own four pillars, walks the twelve months one by one, and marks when to push and when to wait. You see your chart before you pay.
