The 10 Day Masters

4–5 minutes
The 10 Day Masters of Korean saju, with Master Haewol

Which of the ten are you? In Korean saju, the single most important character in your chart is your day master: the heavenly stem of the day you were born. It is the “you” that everything else is read against. There are ten of them, each a yang or yin form of one of the five elements, and each has a classical image, from the tall tree to the morning dew.

This guide gives each day master its own page: personality, strengths and weak spots, the kind of work that suits it, and how it behaves in love. Pick yours below, or read the overview in Your Day Master: the one character that is actually you.

How do yang and yin day masters differ?

Each element has two forms. The yang form is the large, outward version: the tree, the sun, the mountain, raw ore, the river. The yin form is the small, inward one: the vine, the candle, the field, the jewel, the rain. Yang day masters tend to push and lead; yin day masters tend to adapt and refine. Neither is stronger. A yin day master in the right season can be the most powerful character in a chart.

What else changes how a day master shows?

Strength and season. A day master born in the season of its own element is called strong; one born in a season that drains it is called weak. The other seven characters then support, drain or challenge it, and the ten-year luck cycle shifts that balance every decade. That is why two people with the same day master can need opposite advice. The five-element picture is covered in the five elements in your saju, and work styles in career fit by day master.

How do I find my own day master?

Your day master comes from your birth date converted into the traditional calendar. Master Haewol shows it, together with the element balance around it, when she opens your chart, before you pay.

Frequently asked questions

What is a day master in Korean saju?

The day master (일간, ilgan) is the heavenly stem of your birth day pillar. It is the character that stands for you in the chart, and every other character is read in relation to it. There are ten: yang and yin forms of wood, fire, earth, metal and water.

How do I find my day master?

It needs a calendar conversion, not mental arithmetic: the day stem runs in a ten-day cycle tied to the traditional calendar. A saju calculator gives it from your birth date in seconds. Your birth time only matters if you were born late at night, roughly between 11 pm and midnight, where schools differ on when the day changes.

Is my day master the same as my zodiac animal?

No. Your zodiac animal is the branch of your year pillar, shared with everyone born that year. Your day master comes from your birth day, so people born in the same year can have any of the ten.

Which day master is the best?

None. Each of the ten has strengths and blind spots, and the rest of the chart decides how they show. Saju reads balance, not rank.
